Port Orford Heads State Park occupies a bluff above Port Orford on Oregon’s southern coast, combining dramatic ocean views with a strong connection to local maritime history. Established in 1976 for day use, it features the Cove, Tower, and Headland trails, whose overlooks take in the working waterfront and seasonally visible wildlife such as whales, sea lions, and seabirds. The site also preserves the former U.S. Coast Guard lifeboat station that operated here from 1934 to 1970. Its 1934 station building now houses a museum on maritime rescue along this hazardous coast, including a refurbished 36-foot motor lifeboat and exhibits on World War II bombing of the south Oregon coast.
