Plateau Point is an inner-canyon overlook in Grand Canyon National Park on the Tonto Platform below the South Rim in northern Arizona. Standing about 1,600 feet above the Colorado River, it offers a close view of the lower-canyon junction of Garden Creek Canyon and Pipe Creek Canyon, where the canyon’s inner landforms dominate the scene. The point sits on Tapeats Sandstone, a 100- to 200-foot-thick layer above the Great Unconformity, which marks about 1,000 million years of missing geologic time. Plateau Point also shows how the canyon’s layered rocks form terraces and projecting points, and its rugged setting helps explain the route of the Tonto Trail.
