Harlan, Indiana, stands on the north bank of prehistoric Lake Maumee. The ridge formed by that bank was part of the pioneer overland trace from Detroit to Fort Wayne. This route was surveyed as early as 1837 for the ridge road, served in the late nineteenth century as a toll road from Harlan to Fort Wayne, and in 1933 was improved as Indiana State Road 37.
