The fifth church facade changed repeatedly after the Spanish built the first church in 1825 with no decoration. Ten years later, figures of saints were painted on the church face, and over the next 90 years the facade was remodeled twice. After a fire in 1926, the 1835 facade was recreated in relief, including statues of St. John the Baptist, St. Clare, and St. Francis from left to right. To the right of the church, the Rose Garden commemorates the mission graveyard, where more than 6,000 Native Americans, Spaniards, Californios, and Americans were buried at Mission Santa Clara between 1777 and 1851.
