The Five Sites of Santa Clara de Asís Mission
Santa Clara, California
Faith
Santa Clara de Asis Mission moved five times after floods, earthquakes, and fires damaged its sites. The original mission was founded in 1777 near the current site of San Jose airport, with a wood-and-thatch church later commemorated near Seaboard Avenue and Channing Avenue. After flooding of the Guadalupe River destroyed the mission in 1779, a second temporary mission was erected while a third mission was built; the second is memorialized at the corner of de la Cruz Boulevard and Martin Avenue. Completed in 1784, the third mission complex was built of adobe block instead of wood, but was abandoned in 1818 because of earthquake and water damage and is commemorated at the entrance of Santa Clara University. A temporary adobe-and-tile church then served as the fourth mission from 1819 to 1825. When the final mission was completed in 1825 at the present site, the fourth mission church was converted into dormitories for the Ohlone.
