Watkins Slave Cemetery
History
14
Anonymously buried enslaved people were found at this site during road construction in 1960. These unclaimed individuals were associated with the Locust Grove plantation, founded by 1848. Their remains were reburied at Mt. Tabor Church in nearby Chesterfield. The loss of identity in life and death typified the enslaved African American population in Maryland prior to the Civil War.
