Crazy Horse Memorial is an immense mountain carving still under construction in South Dakota's Black Hills on privately held land between Custer and Hill City. Planned to show the Oglala Lakota leader Crazy Horse on horseback pointing toward his tribal land, it was launched after Lakota elder Henry Standing Bear sought a major monument to Native American heroes and enlisted sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski. Work began in 1948 and expanded into a broader cultural complex with Native American museums and education. Though the face was dedicated in 1998, the project remains unfinished, sustained by nonprofit funding and shaped by both admiration and controversy over portraying Crazy Horse in this way.
