Custer’s original Custer County Courthouse, a three-story red-brick building completed in 1881, served as a center of county and Dakota Territory government until 1973. Recognized as a historic site by the U.S. Department of the Interior in November 1972, it was transferred to the Custer County Historical Society after county offices moved to a new courthouse across the street. The society opened a museum there on September 6, 1976. Its exhibits explore the history and culture of the Black Hills, including Lakota Native American culture, George Custer’s 1874 expedition, and the lives of Victorian-era settlers, linking regional history to one of Custer’s historic public buildings.
