Alta Toquima Wilderness is a protected area in central Nevada’s Toquima Range encompassing 35,860 acres within Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It preserves a high, isolated part of the range that includes Mount Jefferson, the highest peak in both the Toquima Range and Nye County. Within it, the 4,953-acre Mount Jefferson Research Natural Area safeguards land around the summit. Known for extreme alpine conditions considered among the most unusual environments in the United States, the wilderness has a stark, elevated character. Its mountain slopes, high-country habitats, and watersheds support bighorn sheep, deer, grouse, chukar, and native trout.
