Lone Elk County Park in western St. Louis County, Missouri, began as part of the Tyson Valley Powder Plant during World War II before becoming parkland after the war. Elk and bison were introduced in 1948, but the federal government later retook the area during the Korean War and the herds were destroyed in 1958 for safety, leaving one bull elk alive. St. Louis County acquired 405 acres in 1964, renamed the site Lone Elk Park in 1966, and opened it in 1971. Known for driving routes with close views of elk and bison, the park also supports deer, wild turkey, and waterfowl.
