William North, born in 1755 and died in 1836, lived in a home erected in 1784. He served as a soldier throughout the Revolution, was aide de camp to Baron Steuben, and became adjutant general of the Provisional Army under Washington in 1798. He was Speaker of the New York Assembly in 1795, 1796, and 1810, served as a United States Senator in 1798, and was a member of the first Canal Commission from 1810 to 1816.
