Grant Memorial Bridge was dedicated as a memorial to General Ulysses S. Grant, eighteenth President of the United States, whose birthplace at Point Pleasant is near the bridge’s west end. The original steel truss bridge was built from 1925-1927 by the Brookville Construction Company of Brookville, Ohio, at a cost of $62,192.60. After the original bridge became structurally deficient, it was replaced in 1985 at a cost of $787,199.03. Cannons, beacons, and stonework from the 1927 bridge were incorporated into the replacement, and the handrail supporting the cast iron nameplate was designed as a visual impression of the 1927 bridge. The new structure and these original appurtenances were rededicated as Grant Memorial Bridge.
