The U.S. Grant and U.S. Grant Commemorative Sites Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on 6 August 1998. The district includes President U.S. Grant Birthplace, dating to 1820-1821; Grant Birthplace Memorial Park, 1925-1928; Grant Memorial Bridge, 1925-1927; the Lee Thompson Caretakers House, 1820; the Caretakers Garage, 1936; and WPA-constructed limestone retaining walls, stone steps leading to the confluence of Indian Creek and the Ohio River, and stone flagging, 1937. The return of the Grant birthplace to Pt. Pleasant was spearheaded by Judge Hugh L. Nichols from 1922-1936.
