H.H. Wheeler, for whom Wheeler County was named, was the first president of the East Oregon Pioneer Assn. and also carried U.S. mail from the Dalles to Canyon City. Near this spot, he was attacked by Indians, wounded, and the mail was looted and the coach destroyed on Sept. 7th, 1866.
