Reynolds Wayside Campground in Mendocino County began as a 419-acre private holding bought in 1928 by Frank W. Reynolds and his wife, who turned it into the Reynolds Redwood Flat resort in 1930 with cabins and other buildings beside the Eel River and a substantial stand of virgin redwood forest. After Reynolds died in 1962, preservation efforts grew as logging interests also sought the land. California acquired it in 1966 to honor Reynolds and protect the grove, then briefly operated it as a roadside recreation area with overnight campsites. Land exchanges in the early 1980s greatly reduced the property, leaving a small park centered on its layered history of recreation, memorialization, and redwood preservation.
