Sawtell Peak is a prominent mountain in eastern Idaho near Henrys Lake, Big Springs, and Brower’s Spring, where waters associated with the Snake and Missouri river headwaters meet a landscape shaped by the Continental Divide. Named for settler Gilman Sawtell, who arrived in the Island Park area in 1868, the peak is geologically distinctive at the eastern end of the Centennial Range, with thick lava flows above older Paleozoic rock and glaciated canyons to the north. Its slopes support varied plant and animal life, and the summit is also important for communications, with radar, radio, and broadcast facilities and wide regional views in clear weather.
