Civilian Conservation Corps Company 765 was established at Mohall, North Dakota, on July 15, 1935, and began work on the upper Souris Refuge. Its accomplishments included building 54 miles of fence, constructing and graveling 15 miles of truck trails, clearing sixty acres of pond sites, moving 51,000 yards of materials, placing riprap at the highway crossing the reservoir, constructing eight large nesting islands, and razing seventy eight farm buildings. The refuge became one of the super refuges of the United States and, undoubtedly, one of the finest nesting areas in the country. Nationwide, the Civilian Conservation Corps helped feed families as young men served their country for a dollar a day, reclaiming and beautifying the land while leaving a legacy for past, present, and future generations of America. In the 1930s and 1940s, the Civilian Conservation Corps relieved poverty, provided lasting conservation projects, and developed hard working, disciplined men devoted to the betterment of America.
