San Miguel Mission is a historic adobe church in Santa Fe, built around 1610 in the Barrio de Analco to serve a community of Native people, including Tlaxcalans who had come with the Spanish from Mexico. Often regarded as the oldest church building in the continental United States, it was in use by 1628 and was probably the settlement’s first church. Damaged or dismantled during seventeenth-century upheavals, it was rebuilt after the Spanish return and largely took its present form in 1710. Its notable features include thick adobe walls, a wooden reredos, and colonial artworks. Restored several times, it remains an active religious site.
