Built in 1898, Morrill Hall was named for Senator Justin Morrill, who introduced legislation in 1861 that led to the creation of a system of land grant colleges, of which the University of Maryland is a member. The building survived a devastating fire in 1912 that destroyed adjacent structures, and it remains the oldest academic building in continuous use.
