In Vienna of the past, Water Street looked out toward the green, grassy ferry landing and the first original ferry site on the Nanticoke River, where old schooners, canoes, shad barges, and other vessels crossed the water. Along Market Street, the gateway to the Elliott Island community, mercantile trading was busy, while parishioners in their finery came and went to and from church on Sunday. Model Ts puttered along Race Street, reflecting a slower-paced waterfront community in the heart of the Chesapeake Country Heritage Area.
