Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, a 78-acre nonprofit garden and herbarium in Mission Canyon near Santa Barbara, is devoted to California native plants, displaying more than 1,000 rare and indigenous species in naturalistic settings. Founded in 1926 with an original design shaped by Beatrix Farrand, it focused by 1936 on the California Floristic Province and became both a public garden and a center for studying and conserving native flora. The property includes miles of trails, Mission Creek, and an 1806 rock dam built by Native Americans, mainly Canaliños, under Spanish mission direction. After losses in the 2009 Jesusita Fire, the garden advanced its recovery with the John C. Pritzlaff Conservation Center, opened in 2016.
