St. Clement's Island State Park is a 62 acre park at the site where Maryland's first colonists landed. One hundred fifty British settlers sailing on the Ark and Dove arrived on the island on March 25, 1634, a date now observed annually as Maryland Day. A representation of the Dove is at Historic St. Mary's City. The original Blackistone Island Light was built in 1851 and remained in service until 1932, when it was automated and left unattended. The original lighthouse burned in 1956. A replica of the Blackistone Light was built on the island in 2008 through the efforts of the St. Clement's Hundred preservation group. John Donahoo built the original Blackistone Light as well as 11 other lighthouses in the region, including the local Piney Point, Point Lookout, and Cove Point Lights.
