St. Clements Island State Park was the first landfall of settlers to Maryland in 1634. A Potomac River landmark for almost four centuries, it has been a thriving farm, a popular summer resort, a target for large guns, and a regular stop for Chesapeake steamboats running between Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Norfolk. Today it is a peaceful 60-acre island retreat managed by the Maryland Park Service, open to the public year-round from sunrise to sunset.
