Conecuh National Forest spans 83,000 acres along the Alabama-Florida line in southern Alabama, where coastal plain terrain supports longleaf pine, hardwood bottomlands, swamps, bogs, creeks, and cypress ponds. Its name likely comes from Muskogee for “land of cane.” The 20-mile Conecuh Trail, begun by the Youth Conservation Corps and extended since 1976, passes through these varied habitats. After much of the forest was clear-cut in the 1930s and replanted with slash pine, managers began restoring native longleaf pine to improve habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Open Pond and Blue Lake add recreation, while the forest remains a notable restoration landscape.
