Nature
Sedgwick Reserve is a 5,896-acre protected research landscape in the San Rafael Mountains of Santa Barbara County, north of Santa Barbara near Santa Ynez. Once part of Rancho La Laguna, it is administered by the University of California, Santa Barbara within the University of California Natural Reserve System. The reserve supports natural science research and education through a field station serving researchers, classes, and meetings. Its varied native ecosystems, including vernal pools, chaparral, and coastal sage scrub, make it valuable for studying California ecology. Closed to general recreation, it also hosted prescribed fire training and fire-ecology programs in 2022 and 2023.
