Two railroad lines and a depot shaped Amherst Junction as rail service first carried lumber to mills in the Stevens Point area and later hauled farm products such as potatoes. An underpass reduced the danger of two sets of tracks crossing Main Street in Amherst Junction, and travelers used the sheltered stairway to pass between tracks. Salesmen, summer sightseers, and hobos arrived by train, and the Tomorrow River Trail now follows an old railroad grade through a sandy outwash plain, the Arnott Moraine, and a landscape formed by glaciers.
