Palmetto Bluff was the 18,000-acre retreat that R.T. Wilson Jr. acquired in 1902 and named as an idyllic home away from New York City. Marion and Richard T. Wilson Jr.'s winter and spring home was a four-story mansion that occupied what is now the Wilson Village Green, took approximately five years to construct, and was completed in 1914. After its completion, it became the site of many lavish parties for the Wilson family and friends. On March 2, 1926, the mansion caught fire and was reduced to ashes, and after the loss of his beloved home, Wilson returned to New York and sold the entire property to J.E. Varn a few months later.
