The one hundred block of South Montezuma Street became known as Whiskey Row for the many saloons that once lined it, a reputation captured in Prescott poet Gail Gardner’s verse about starting at the Kaintucky bar and ending near the Depot House some forty drinks later. On July 14, 1900, fire completely destroyed the block, but within days rebuilding had begun in brick and masonry. Most of the buildings were constructed between the fall of 1900 and 1905, including Sam'l Hill Hardware Company, the Highland Hotel, the Palace, the Levey Building, and the Hotel St. Michael. Built with permanence and appearance in mind in styles typical of the early 20th century, these structures included architecturally progressive and outstanding examples, and together they formed a unified frontage on the Courthouse Plaza that created a unique turn-of-the-century facade that remains essentially intact.
