Juniper Island Light on Lake Champlain in Vermont was established to guide vessels approaching Burlington Harbor and became the lake’s oldest light station. First created in 1826 to replace a simple private beacon, the site began with a 30-foot brick tower and was rebuilt in 1846 as a distinctive cast-iron lighthouse connected to a brick keeper’s house. After receiving a fourth-order Fresnel lens in 1853, the station also later supported harbor operations as a storage depot. Although the light was discontinued in 1954 and the keeper’s house was badly damaged by fire in 1962, the tower survived as the oldest surviving cast-iron lighthouse in the United States.
