The Henry S. Conard Environmental Research Area is a three hundred sixty-five-acre protected preserve near Kellogg, Iowa, owned by Grinnell College and used for ecology teaching and research. Once cropland, it was acquired in 1968 and gradually restored into prairie, woodland, and oak savanna, becoming a notable example of ecological recovery. Named for botanist, bryologist, and ecologist Henry S. Conard, the site also includes an Environmental Education Center added in 2005 whose LEED Gold status made it Iowa’s first building to receive that rating. Beyond science, it has also supported art, including Andy Goldsworthy’s enduring stone cairn and a workshop led by Sandy Skoglund.
