Putnamville’s first school stood on this land by 1864 and was taught by Mr. Wakefield from New England before it was later destroyed by fire. The last school at this site was erected in 1908-1937 by A.L. Evens, with four classrooms and a basement cafeteria. Children either walked to school or rode in a horse-drawn hack that forded the streams, and the horses rested in a barn east of the church. Two of three classes met in one room, and Putnamville offered three years of high school before seniors chose to transfer to Cloverdale, Greencastle, or Reelsville. The school remained in use until 1969, and afterward served as the South Putnam superintendent’s office until it was torn down.
