In remembrance of African-American soldiers who served in World War I, the memorial names Chester Baker, William Baker, Golias Baker, Jessie Hagler, Hamon Long, Emanuel Snelling Jr, Fred White, John Brown, Frank Cobb, Warren Crawford, Robert A. Harrell, Cary Hayes, and Monroe Anderson. On March 11, 1919, Armstrong Purdee filed a petition asking the Board to permit the colored people of Jackson County, Florida, to erect a monument on the courthouse square in memory of the soldiers of their race who had fallen at the battle front in France during the World War. A major advocate was attorney Armstrong Purdee, Esq., identified in 1919 as the first African-American lawyer of Jackson County, and Curley Spires Potter is also identified as an advocate.
