Public road closings led Bill France to eliminate time trials before some Daytona races and move south to the more remote Ponce Inlet course. The first NASCAR sanctioned race was held here on the new Beach-Road course on Feb 15, 1948. Winner Red Byron praised mechanic Red Vogt, who worked on 10 winners in 13 Beach races from 1940 to 1948, including 7 in a row. A punctured oil pan kept Red Byron from winning the final 1948 Beach Race.
