A bustling fairtime view at the corner of Dayan and State Streets in Lowville showed horses, buggies, and crowded streets, along with Stoddard and Bateman dry goods store, H. F. Weber Real Estate and Insurance upstairs, Bostwick Clothing Store, and Fowler and Green Hardware store farther south. The 10th Cavalry Regiment, formed as a segregated African-American unit immediately after the Civil War and one of the original Buffalo Soldier regiments in the post Civil War Regular Army, later served in the Indian Wars in the western United States, the Spanish American War in Cuba, and the Philippine-American War, and marched through Lowville in 1910 to Pine Camp for summer training. The cobblestone road was removed and the streets were paved in October 1912, and cars were once parked at an angle along State Street. A later view from the Bateman preserved a close-up of buildings that are now gone. On October 22, 1999, a fire permanently changed this corner when five businesses—Sherwin Williams, Comfort Zone, Hair Mane, Dollar Store, and Urbaniak Studio—were destroyed, though the efforts of the Lowville Fire Department, nine surrounding fire departments, and a solid firewall stopped the fire from spreading farther south.
