Douglas Aircraft began airplane production at this location in 1941. Over the years, Douglas Aircraft and later The Boeing Company produced 15,576 military and civilian aircraft on the site. During peak production, the Long Beach plant produced an airplane every two hours. At its height, the facility employed 50,000 workers and had the highest percentage of female employees of any plant in America. The site has since been transformed into a LEED Certified development with office, hotel, industrial and manufacturing uses, shopping, restaurants, and expansive open space for the community.
