Long Beach was a center for early aviation and established Southern California's first municipal airport here in 1924. The airport was originally named Daugherty Field for aviation pioneer Earl S. Daugherty, who had a nearby flying school and successfully lobbied for the airport's establishment. Aviation has been one of the pillars of the city's history and economy, and the terminal building is a masterpiece of early architecture that contains unique ceramic mosaic floor murals.
