Near this site, on September 6, 1869, one of the worst disasters in the history of anthracite mining in the United States occurred when a fire started at the bottom of the shaft, the only exit from the Avondale Mine, and claimed 110 lives. Most victims were of Welsh descent, including lads of 10 and 14 years.
