Saline, Eddy, and Varmint traces met at Big Spring, Princeton, and developed into today's roads. First forged by buffalo, they were later used by Indians and pioneers. One fork of the Saline Trace crossed the Ohio River at Cave-in-Rock, and another at Golconda, Illinois. The Eddy Trace was also known as the Palmyra-Princeton Trail. The Varmint Trace ran from Princeton to the Cumberland River.
