Established in 1960 by combining several large parcels, Wheaton Regional Park became one of Montgomery County’s largest parks and today spans 538.7 acres in Wheaton, Maryland. Organized around the Shorefield, Glenallan, and Orebaugh entrances, it combines recreation, nature, and education through Pine Lake, trails, sports facilities, riding stables, Brookside Nature Center, and Brookside Gardens. Distinctive attractions include the Ovid Hazen Wells Carousel, built in 1915 and later operated on the National Mall before moving here, and a miniature train modeled on an 1863 engine. The park also preserves the Harper Family Log House, an 1870s home of an African-American landowning family relocated here in 1976.
