Brookside Gardens is a fifty-four-acre public botanical garden in Wheaton Regional Park in Silver Spring, Maryland, created on former Stadler Nursery land and opened in 1969 after a design by Hans Hanses emphasized practical garden “rooms” with plants local homeowners could grow. It began with formal gardens, an azalea walk, a wedding gazebo, and a conservatory, then expanded with the Fragrance, Rose, Gude, Trial, and Aquatic gardens, a visitors center, and later additions including a butterfly exhibit, holiday light display, Reflection Terrace, a labyrinth, and a rain garden. Today thirty-two acres are cultivated and the garden remains a major public landscape and horticultural destination.
