Built in 1846 of hand-hewn timbers and hand-made nails, Hawks Inn was created by builder and owner Nelson Paige Hawks (1799-1863), a cultured Yankee who served as Delafield’s first Postmaster, a Justice of the Peace, Town Chairman, owner of a grist and saw mill, and builder of the first town hall. The inn became the most popular stagecoach stop between Waukesha and Madison on the Milwaukee-Madison line. It is one of 13 buildings in Waukesha County cited by the Historic American Building Survey of the U.S. Department of Interior, and it was moved from its original site in 1960 by the Hawks Inn Historical Society.
