One of the two original tram cars of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, this cabin made the inaugural trip up Chino Canyon on September 12, 1963, and completed more than 175,000 round trips before being retired in June 2000. When the tramway opened in 1963, it was the longest and steepest in the world and was considered an engineering marvel because helicopters transported men and material to the Mountain Station and four of the five towers. Built by Von Roll Tramways of Thun, Switzerland, the aircraft aluminum cabin held 80 passengers and 1 operator, was 18 feet long, had an interior height of 9 feet, used a 1,000 HP DC hoist motor, and could travel at 8 meters per second, 18 mph, or 1600 feet per minute. Each cabin could also carry an 800 gallon water tank to supply the Mountain Station, and all equipment and supplies for the station were carried up the mountain inside the cabin. The red car, cabin 1, was affectionally called Crocker after Francis Crocker, father of the tramway, and the blue car, cabin 2, was called Coffman after Earl Coffman, the main support for building the tramway. The original tram cars also appeared in television shows and films including Columbo, Mission Impossible, Kotch, and Matt Helm.
