Chino Canyon is a 5.5-mile desert canyon at the northern end of the San Jacinto Mountains where they meet the Coachella Valley in Southern California. Its exceptionally steep drop, from more than 8,500 feet on the south rim to under 2,700 feet on the valley floor in less than a mile, makes it one of North America's steepest canyons. Springs in the canyon feed a waterfall and Chino Canyon Creek, which later dries up downstream. The canyon also carries the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, built in 1963 and redesigned in 2000 as the world's largest rotating aerial tramway, and it was the site of a 1942 mid-air collision.
