A flag serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the attacks of September 11, 2001. Grand Isle County residents erected it during the 24 hours following the event. It first flew from a birch pole set on a sand bar in the lake and was later moved to higher ground. On September 11, 2010, the flag was moved to its permanent site in a ceremony including fire fighters, police, rescue personnel, and ordinary citizens. The flag and pole are maintained by the Grand Isle VFW and the Vermont Department of Transportation.
