Just before the battle at 6 A.M., Confederate and Union positions were set opposite each other. During the first hours of fighting, the right of the Union line collapsed. General Rosecrans then anchored a new Union line on the Round Forest and along the Nashville Pike as Confederates sought to break it and cut the Federals off from Nashville. Two Confederate sweeps, one at 10 A.M. and another an hour later, were checked, with the last coming within 150 yards of Round Forest. Fresh Confederate troops then arrived and launched the most powerful attack in this sector, but they were hurled back. Reinforced again, they made a fourth attack, and it too was smashed. Confederate failure here foretold the Union victory.
