The two armies, more than 80,000 men, were now within killing distance of each other as night fell and a chilling wind rose. Through cedar thickets and across muddy fields came the unsettling sounds of moving infantry and artillery. Some men tried to sleep, while others reflected on the next day's battle and thought of home. In the darkness, bands from both armies began to play, and when one band started "Home Sweet Home," others joined in. After the song ended, an uneasy silence settled over the night, and for many men in blue and gray it was the last song they would ever hear.
