Steins Peak is a 5,864-foot mountain in southwestern New Mexico near the Arizona line, in Hidalgo County just east of the border and north-northwest of the community of Steins. Named for U.S. Army Major Enoch Steen, who led troops and an expedition in the area in 1849 and the early 1850s, it became more than a local landmark. Travelers used the peak to locate the Doubtful Canyon pass through the Peloncillo Mountains, and during the Butterfield Overland Mail era it helped mark the route. The mail line also established Steins Peak Station north of the mountain along Doubtful Canyon.
