Around 160,000 men fought on the hills of Resaca, where about 7,000 died, many more were wounded, and others were captured and spent the rest of the war in Confederate or Union prison camps. Accounts from soldiers recall acts of bravery, close escapes, relentless shelling, and exhausting combat. Captain James M. Summers of the 42nd Georgia saved most of his company when he seized a lighted bomb that fell among them and threw it into a nearby ravine, where it exploded. Colonel Lovick Pierce Thomas remembered eight bullet holes in his clothing and blanket during the desperate fighting at Resaca and taking command of the 42nd Georgia after Colonel R.J. Henderson was wounded along with nearly all the officers and more than one hundred men. Thomas Jefferson Walker of the 9th Tennessee recalled carrying water to men near the front, being pinned down all day under fire from Parrott guns, and helping bear wounded comrades away before crossing the river as the bridge was blown up behind them. Robert M. Magill of the 39th Georgia wrote of digging works with bayonets and hands, heavy skirmishing and shelling, repeated fighting around abandoned guns, and then, during the withdrawal after dark, a spent minie ball lodging harmlessly in a soldier's cornbread. John S. Jackman of the 9th Kentucky remembered whiskey rations leaving some men barely able to march. John Dacuble of the 6th Kentucky described climbing Rocky Face Mountain after the enemy withdrew, seeing extensive abandoned fortifications and camps, then losing comrades at Resaca, enduring a Rebel charge, and being driven back in an attack on enemy works. First Lieutenant Isum Gwin of the 80th Indiana recorded advancing to within one hundred yards of the enemy forts in a charge that cost his unit twenty-six killed and one hundred wounded out of two hundred seventy engaged. Private Gottried Rentschler of the 6th Kentucky reflected on generals whose appearance could mislead and on lying for hours under deadly Confederate sharpshooter fire near a rock wall, where even a handkerchief raised in jest drew immediate shots.
