During the Civil War, the Union Army under General William T. Sherman fought the Confederate Army under General Joseph E. Johnston at the village of Resaca early in the Campaign for Atlanta. The battle took place from May 13 to 15, 1864. In early May 1864, Johnston's Confederate army encamped along Rocky Face Ridge while Sherman's Union army camped at Chattanooga. From May 7 to 11, portions of both armies battled at Buzzard's Roost Pass, also called Mill Creek Gap, and Dug Gap along Rocky Face Ridge. On May 9, McPherson's Army of the Tennessee advanced to Bald Hill at Resaca through Snake Creek Gap before retreating. On May 10, Sherman abandoned attempts at Mill Creek Gap and Dug Gap and proceeded south to Snake Creek Gap. From May 10 to 12, the Confederate army took up position in entrenchments at Resaca, and from May 10 to 13 skirmishing occurred in Camp Creek valley as each army moved into position. On May 14, Palmer's Fourteenth Corps and Schofield's Twenty-third Corps attacked Hood's and Hardee's corps at mid-day, Logan's Fifteenth Corps of the Army of the Tennessee attacked Polk's Corps late in the afternoon, Hooker's Twentieth Corps moved to a northern position as reinforcement, and Sweeny moved a portion of the Fourteenth Corps to Lay's Ferry. On May 15, Hooker's Twentieth Corps attacked Hood's Corps, a counterattack later in the day brought Stewart's and Stevenson's divisions against Hooker's and Howard's corps, Logan's Fifteenth Corps artillery moved into range of Resaca's railroad and bridge, Sweeny's forces crossed at Lay's Ferry, and Johnston began retreat across the Oostanaula River. Only a portion of the battlefield is preserved at the historic site, with related sites in Resaca including Fort Wayne and the Resaca Confederate Cemetery, while additional portions preserved by Gordon County are opened to the public only during special events.
