First called "The Opening," a natural clearing in the forest, Huntertown was settled about 1837. It stood on the old Lima Plank Road connecting Howe (Lima) and Fort Wayne. It was home to the Perry Centre Seminary, founded in 1856 and closed in 1861 when the entire faculty and all adult students enlisted in the Union Army.
